Mazagran cups have an interesting history and are particularly associated with 19th century France, where the thick porcelain walls ensured that the coffee stayed hot. The old cups were often used for a mixture of strong coffee and a dash of brandy - which is why many of them have a distinctive internal stripe marking where the coffee should stop and the brandy should start.
