Old mazagran coffee cup with orange and gold rim
Beautiful old mazagran porcelain coffee cup with fine patination and a warm play of colors. It has a decorative orange rim at the top gilded with gold and matching orange markings on the base. The combination of colors gives the cup a particularly vibrant look that stands out from the more classic blue or white variants.
Mazagran cups take their name from the town of Mazagran in Algeria, where French soldiers in the 1840s were said to have drunk strong coffee mixed with spirits to keep warm during battle. Later, the cups became popular in Parisian cafés, where they evolved into the iconic tall shape with thick porcelain that both retained heat and made them durable for everyday use.
A charming piece of French cultural history that can be used as a coffee cup today or displayed as a decorative collectible.
