French jars - from confit to classic storage jars
French jars are the epitome of rustic charm and functional design. They range from the iconic confit jars used for centuries to store fat and food, to decorative clay and ceramic jars in various shapes and glazes. Each jar bears the mark of French craftsmanship and tells a story of everyday life and cultural heritage.
Confit jars - pot à graisse with history
The word confit comes from the French confire, which means "to preserve". Confit jars - also called pot à graisse - were traditionally used to store duck fat, butter and confit products. They are characterized by:
- Robust clay with rustic texture
- Partial glazing on the inside and upper outside
- Typically cream, white or green glazes depending on region
- A distinctive shape with a wide base, narrow opening and often small handles
- Visible signs of use such as cracks, wear or small chips that emphasize authenticity
At Fransk Brocante, many of our confit jars originate from the Gascony region, where the glaze often has darker shades with green highlights.
French jars in interior design
Today, French jars are no longer used for food storage, but they have found a new role in the home:
- In the kitchen: for kitchen utensils, flowerpots or as storage for dry goods
- In the living room: as vases, solitary design objects or decorative elements on sideboards and shelves
- On the terrace or in the garden: as planters or decorative tubs - not frost-proof and therefore must be brought inside during winter
Why French jars are popular
- Handmade French ceramics with history
- Unique colors and glazes that vary from region to region
- Functional and decorative at the same time
- Coveted collectibles with authentic patina
- Creates atmosphere and character in both modern and classic interiors
