FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHAMPAGNE COOLERS

Antique champagne coolers with a logo

What is a champagne cooler?

A champagne cooler is a bucket or container used to keep champagne and wine cold using ice. Champagne coolers are available for single bottles and for multiple bottles. The latter are also called champagne bowls.

In early France, the champagne cooler was a status symbol. That's why you'll find antique models that are beautifully decorated or even bear a coat of arms. In the 1800s, the major champagne houses began to apply their logos to champagne coolers as part of their branding for restaurants and bistros.

Today, champagne coolers are used for festive occasions, everyday use and even in interior design as vases or simply as a piece of art.

How much ice should you put in a champagne bucket?

Fill it halfway with ice, add the champagne or whatever bottle you want to chill, and top it off with cold water so that it covers most of the bottle and the ice cubes. The water prevents the ice from melting right away and keeps the bottle cold longer.

Let it sit like that for about 20 minutes so the ice and water have time to chill the bottle. Then you're ready to serve.

What materials are French Brocante champagne coolers made of?

At Fransk Brocante you can find champagne coolers in a variety of materials, ranging from silver plated either silver plated or silverplated, brass, pewter, glass, crystal and steel and aluminum.

How do I choose the right champagne cooler?

Choosing a champagne cooler is often a matter of taste - or can be purpose-specific.

If we’re going to help you choose, there are a few things we’ll need to ask so we can find the perfect champagne cooler for you: intended use, material, design, and budget.

First and foremost, what is the occasion: Are you throwing a party, is it for personal use, or is it a gift for him or her, an anniversary, a birthday, etc.?

When serving champagne to a large group, a large champagne cooler is indispensable. These spacious models can hold several bottles at once and are therefore popular in restaurants, bistros, and at large events.

They are available in various sizes—holding 2–4 bottles or up to 6–8 bottles. The material often dictates the size as well. The largest champagne coolers, designed to hold many bottles, are usually made of steel, as they were previously used in restaurants and bistros, and steel is a material that can be easily washed. The large champagne coolers—but in smaller sizes—are available in both pewter and silver-plated versions. They require a bit of care in the form of polishing if you don’t want to preserve the patina finish.

Whether it’s for a small gathering or simply when you have guests over, a single-bottle champagne cooler is a good option. The same applies if you’re looking for a gift. In that case, we recommend buying a champagne cooler for a single bottle, as it’s more a matter of personal taste than a specific purpose. And remember, it can always be exchanged, and we always have a wide selection of silver-plated champagne coolers as well as champagne coolers made of glass and crystal.

Of course, budget also plays a role - we have champagne coolers in all price ranges.

Whether for parties, personal use, or as a gift, there’s a more affordable option when it comes to champagne coolers: those made of aluminum and steel. They’re available both with and without the champagne houses’ logos, and some come with a base while others have a classic shape.

Why choose an antique champagne cooler?

An antique champagne cooler is not only a champagne cooler, but also a piece of French cultural history.

Like many of our vintage products, champagne coolers also bear the mark of their origin. It may have been in a French chateau or in a bistro in Paris in the 1050s where people sat smoking cigarettes and drinking champagne, or it may have been a limited but beautiful advertising campaign for Moët & Chandon at major events or in selected restaurants.

A French antique champagne cooler adds charm, soul, value and authenticity to your decor - and when you're not using it for champagne or wine, it makes a beautiful vase.

How do I clean my champagne cooler?

We recommend washing the cooler by hand with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid dishwasher as it can damage the surface and patina.

We recommend gently polishing silver-plated, silver-coated, and brass coolers using a product such as Silvo or Brasso. This is if you want a shinier finish; many people also choose to preserve the original patina. We’ve created aguideon how to care for, maintain, and clean vintage products.

Can I give a champagne cooler as a gift?

Yes—a vintage champagne cooler is the perfect gift idea for a wedding, milestone birthday, or anniversary—or simply for the bon vivant or the man who has everything. It combines luxury, style, and functionality, making it a keepsake that will last for years to come.

And remember - the recipient of the gift can always exchange it if it doesn't suit their taste.
