FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHAMPAGNE COOLERS

Antikke champagnekølere med logo

What is a champagne cooler?

A champagne cooler is a bucket or container used to keep champagne and wine cold using ice. Champagne coolers are available for single bottles and for multiple bottles. The latter are also known as champagne bowls.

In early France, the champagne cooler was a status symbol. For this reason, one can also find antique models that are beautifully decorated or even bear a coat of arms. In the 19th century, the major champagne houses began applying their logos to the champagne coolers as part of their branding for restaurants and bistros.

Today, champagne coolers are used for festive occasions, for everyday use, and even in interior design as vases or simply as a piece of art.

How much ice should go into a champagne cooler?

Fill it halfway with ice, put in the champagne or the bottle you want to chill, and top it off with cold water so it covers a good portion of the bottle and ice cubes. The water ensures that the ice doesn't melt immediately and keeps the bottle cold for longer.

Let it sit for about 20 minutes so the ice and water have time to chill the bottle. And then you are ready to serve.

What materials are Fransk Brocante's champagne coolers available in?

At Fransk Brocante, you can find champagne coolers in several different materials, ranging from silver-plated, either as silver-plated or electroplated silver, brass, pewter, glass, crystal, and steel and aluminum.

How do I choose the right champagne cooler?

Choosing a champagne cooler is usually a matter of taste - or can be purpose-specific.

If we are to guide you, there are several things we will ask about in order to find the perfect champagne cooler for you: purpose, material, design, and budget.

First and foremost, what is the purpose: Are you hosting a party, is it for private use, or is it a gift for him or her, an anniversary, a birthday, etc.?

When serving champagne to many, a large champagne cooler is indispensable. These spacious models can hold several bottles at a time and are therefore popular in restaurants, bistros, and at large events.

They come in different sizes - 2-4 bottles and up to 6-8 bottles. The material often also dictates the size. The largest champagne coolers for many bottles are usually made of steel, as they have historically been used in restaurants and bistros, and steel is a material that can be cleaned quickly. The large champagne coolers - but in smaller sizes - are available in both pewter and silver-plated versions. These require a little love in the form of polishing if you do not want to keep the patina look.

If it is for a smaller gathering or simply for when you have guests over, a champagne cooler for a single bottle is an option. The same applies if it is for a gift. For that, we recommend buying a champagne cooler for single bottles, as it is more a matter of taste than purpose-specific. And remember, it can always be exchanged, and we always have a large selection of silver-plated champagne coolers and champagne coolers in glass and crystal.

Budget, of course, also plays a role - we have champagne coolers in all price ranges.

For parties, private use, and as gifts, there is a more affordable choice of champagne cooler, namely those in aluminum and steel. They are available both with and without champagne house logos and some on a pedestal, others in a classic shape.

Why choose an antique champagne cooler?

An antique champagne cooler is not just a champagne cooler, but also a piece of French cultural history.

Like many of our vintage products, the champagne coolers also bear the marks of their origin. Perhaps it stood in a French château, or it was in a Parisian bistro in the 1950s where people sat smoking cigarettes and drinking champagne, or it was part of a limited but beautiful promotional campaign for Moët & Chandon for major events or at select restaurants.

A French antique champagne cooler adds charm, soul, value, and authenticity to your interior design – and when you are not using it for champagne or wine, it is truly beautiful as a vase.

How do I clean my champagne cooler?

We recommend washing the cooler by hand with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid the dishwasher, as it can damage the surface and the patina.

For silver-plated and brass coolers, we recommend polishing gently with, for example, Silvo or Brasso. This is if you want a shinier surface, although many also choose to preserve the original patina. We have created a guide on how to care for, maintain, and clean vintage products.

Can I give a champagne cooler as a gift?

Yes – a vintage champagne cooler is a perfect gift idea for a wedding, milestone birthday, or anniversary – or simply for the connoisseur or the man who has everything. It combines luxury, aesthetics, and function, becoming a keepsake that will last for many years.

And remember – the person receiving the gift can always exchange it if it doesn't suit their taste.
